Students were taken to ABT Parcel Services. Mr Nachimuthu founded ABT (The Anamallais Bus Transport Limited), a passenger transport company on 28.8.1931 in Pollachi, in Tamilnadu. The company earned goodwill, reputation and trust from the people and “A B T” brand is built in the market as a strong brand. Now, they have grown and are into Logistics. Their first delivery was through bullock carts in 1920. ABT has its head office in the Race course road. There are 10 hubs all over India. They deliver to more than 10787 pin codes where even coaches do not. ONS delivery that supplies through surface equalizes their competitors in air delivery. There are three types of packaging namely rigid, semi rigid and flexible.
A container freight station (CFS) is a warehouse where goods are consolidated into or deconsolidated from containers for transport to their next destination. They also have transport materials that are supposed to be kept cold. Ex: Meat and vegetables. Mr Shyam Sundhar from ABT took students throughout the session. They follow hub and spoke logistic model used to simplify a network of routes. Logistics can be over surface, air and sea. ABT has more than 500 depots in India. Students watched load being unloaded from the truck at the bay. Load men are told what to load and unload. ABT provides end to end solution for their customers. They pull out materials through franchising and redistribute the materials. ABT has 29 local franchises and 500 franchises across India. There is a predefined schedule for routes and transport. ABT involves door pick up and door delivery and have 100 vehicles that can carry goods from 350 Kg to 40 tons.
They unload goods in portable platform pallets depending upon the weight. Pallets are used so that they carry 50 boxes at one time. Once, they are unloaded, the products go to a specific place where they are stocked according to where they need to get redistributed. They have certain codes for representing the names of places where the products are supposed to get redistributed. Sometimes, the trucks stop at certain depots to unload some goods there and then take its way. They get a forward note and documents required as per the norms from the customers. It is the basic agreement between the transporter and the customer giving the customer and product details. The drivers handle way-bill to the person in the hub to ensure that no theft has happened. The drivers can take sufficient rest during their journey, but it should lead to over time delivery. All over India, they have 350 trucks and contract vary in the range of 80 to 100. They transport 12 lakh materials every month. Every 3 to 5 km, they have a franchise in cities and every 25 km, they have a franchise in rural areas. There are 2500 employees in total in ABT.
Customers are charged on two factors, namely Weight (of the gods) & distance and Volume (of the goods) and distance. Three types of payment available are Paid (paid at the time of booking), To pay delivery (To pay at the time of delivery) and Credit facilities to pay later. They maximize the load in the every vehicle for optimal. The Truck scheduler is in charge of the decision to choose the route. Example: If the goods that are to be transported to Salem are very less, and a lot of goods are to be transported to Chennai. They don’t ply separate trucks to Salem. The trucks that go to Chennai travel via Salem to drop the necessary goods there. SCM (Supply Chain Management) in ABT includes the whole process of managing logistics, point of order placements, inventory, information flows and tail end delivery. ABT introduced mobile booking by wireless printers. Customers can also use tab to book. Hence, a lot of Operations Research techniques go in Logistics Company. Logistics has a very good scope in future. Customer satisfaction is the best way to market the products.
